8 Ways to Stay Warm This Winter

December has finally arrived, which means chilly days are upon us. The we and we now have gorgeous snowy landscapes for some socially distanced adventuring. Plus, Christmas decorations are sparkling and shining this time of year! As exciting as it is to put up Christmas decorations with “Last Christmas” playing on repeat and the delicious smell of hot chocolate wafting through the air, the cold can put a damper on our spirits and activities. Turning on the heat 12 hours a day can rack up quite a hefty bill we’d rather not have during a gift-giving season. Fortunately, there are other ways to stay warm and cozy other than your typical electric or gas heater. Here are 8 of our favorite ways to complement or replace a heater altogether this winter:

1. Cook Warm, Hearty Foods

If you look at the delicious recipes typically labeled as “winter dishes”, you’ll see a common theme that they’re typically warm, savory, and soft. From cheesy casseroles to hot chocolate, “winter recipes” will warm up your core and heat up your home as they’re being cooked, as they often require an oven or pressure cooker in use for extended amounts of time. Regardless of what you cook, cooking at home also helps keep you warm by keeping you at home more often. That means fewer trips outside to pick up food.

2. Use a Humidifier

“Humidity” is a word you often hear described in tandem with hot, tropical weather, known for amplifying the heat. While this can be a pain in the summer, it can feel like a blessing in the winter. Since not all of us live in humid climates, try a humidifier to increase the moisture in the air. A little extra humidity can keep your hair and skin moisturized, as cold weather can dry it out. If you don’t have a humidifier, boil a pot of water on the stove and turn off the flames. The vapor from the water will humidify the air.

3. Add Rugs

Hardwood or linoleum floors can feel like ice if it’s cold enough. Adding a large rug can add a decorative touch to the room and can warm up your feet while you walk on it. Rugs can also add insulation, further trapping heat in the room.

4. Hang Heavy Curtains

Heavy, thick fleece curtains won’t just look cozier and more plush, they’ll warm up the room as well. Think of them as a blanket for the room: thickness and positioning matters. Placing the top of curtains a few inches above the top of the window retains more heat. Adding a cornice at the top further enhances this and adds a little aesthetic touch as well.

5. Wear Socks Indoors

No shoes needed! Wearing socks indoors means you’re covering up a little more. Since cotton typically wicks away heat and keeps you cool, opt for wool to retain heat instead. And if you often go out in a rainy climate and are prone to getting wet feet, bring an extra pair of socks with you.

6. Seal up Any Cracks

Even if all your doors and windows are closed, the cold can still sneak in through cracks you can’t even see. If you’ve got older single-pane windows, there might be a millimeter or two where it doesn’t quite make contact with the wall. Before replacing your windows altogether, try caulking.

7. Put Hand Warmers in Your Pockets

Level up the power of your pockets by leaving some hand warmers inside. If you’re not a fan of gloves, put hand warmers in your coat pockets. You can buy them in major stores or make your own in just 5 minutes with a few ingredients.
