These 5 simple tips will enhance your sleep sanctuary and help you to get the restful and restorative sleep that you need and deserve.

Tip #1: Give Your Mattress an Assessment

Sleep experts have been recommending that we replace our mattresses every seven years for quite a while now, but that doesn’t mean it’s a magic number. If you’re not feeling rested when you wake up in the morning, it might be time for you to upgrade your mattress, even if you’ve had it for fewer than the recommended seven years. Your mattress should provide support to your entire body, and give you the comfort that you need to fall (and stay!) asleep. If you’re still sleeping on a traditional innerspring mattress, and waking up feeling tired or with aches and pains, it might be time to upgrade to a memory foam mattress – they’ve been shown to give sleepers a more even distribution of weight and a cooler night’s sleep.

Tip #2: Keep Things Clean

Even “neat freaks” tend to overlook their bed when it comes to cleaning the house since mattresses are hidden below the sheets and out of sight. That doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve attention too! Run a vacuum brush attachment over your mattress every three months when you vacuum the rest of the house. This will help keep it fresh and free from allergens that can accumulate on the mattress surface over time.

Tip #3: Give Your Bedding a Freshening Up

Although higher thread counts can seem luxurious and like the better option for your sleep sanctuary, they can also be heavier and should be reserved for the cooler months. For a light, airy feel while sleeping, stick with a thread count of between 200 and 300.

Tip #4: Keep Layers Light

Like layers, even in the summer? Try a light cotton blanket or quilt to give you the added comfort of snuggling up, without heating you up.

Tip #5: Keep a Cool Head

If you’ve spent much of your time in bed flipping the pillow over to get to the cool side of comfort, you’re in luck – new pillow materials and designs have removed the need for flipping. Look for pillows that offer a cooling synthetic (like gel), as well as the added support of foam. Many of these new pillows also come in a variety of shape options to accommodate all types of sleepers, such as the traditional pillow form for stomach and back sleepers, and a contoured model for those that like to sleep on their sides. Taking the time to give your sleeping area a summer refresher with these 5 tips can make a huge difference in getting the cooling and comforting sleep that you want and need – no matter how hot and sweaty it is outside!
